Why I Ask My Mom About My Trading Charts
- Olivia Voz
Hey,
Most traders think more analysis equals better trades. More indicators, more models, more screen time. I used to think that too.
Then I started asking my mom what she saw on my charts. Changed everything.
Here's what happened: I'm staring at this Bitcoin chart, running through all my usual analysis. Support levels, resistance zones, technical models – the whole nine yards. I'm seeing buying opportunities everywhere because that's what I'm trained to look for.
So I call over my mom. "Don't worry about what you're looking at," I tell her. "You don't need to know anything about trading. Just tell me – what do you see in this picture?"
She takes one look and says: "This looks like something that went up really nice and steady, then all of a sudden had a fast and scary drop."
That's it. No technical jargon. No analysis paralysis. Just pure, unfiltered perspective.
And she was absolutely right.
While I'm hunting for buying opportunities and analyzing crossovers, she's seeing the obvious: this thing looks broken. The steady climb followed by the cliff dive. She even pointed out that the recent action didn't look like the earlier, orderly movement – it looked chaotic.
My mom just saved me from fighting a falling knife while I was busy being "smart."
Here's the thing about fresh eyes that traders miss:
We get so locked into our models and patterns that we stop seeing what's actually happening. We're like that person searching frantically for their glasses while wearing them. The answer is right there, but our expertise blinds us to it.
Your brain wants to find what it's looking for. If you're hunting for buy signals, you'll find buy signals even when the chart is screaming "DANGER" to anyone without trading baggage.
How to get fresh perspective on your trades:
Ask someone who knows nothing about trading. Could be your spouse, kids, neighbor, whoever. The key is they have zero technical knowledge to cloud their judgment.
Be nice about it. Don't make them feel like they need to solve some complex puzzle. Just say: "I'm curious what you see in this picture. Don't overthink it."
Listen without explaining. Don't coach them toward your preferred answer. Let them tell you what they observe without your trading lens.
Ask different people. Your goldfish works too (seriously). The point is breaking out of your analytical bubble where you can't see obvious patterns anymore.
Make it conversational, not clinical. This should feel natural, not like you're conducting a market research study.
I've done this dozens of times since that Bitcoin revelation. Sometimes nothing comes of it – that's fine. But when someone with zero trading knowledge points out something obvious that I completely missed? Those moments save me from expensive mistakes.
The best part? It's actually fun. Instead of grinding alone in your trading cave, you're connecting with people while getting legitimate market insight. Win-win.
Your edge isn't always about having more information than everyone else. Sometimes it's about seeing clearly what's already there.
Next time you're convinced you've spotted the perfect setup, try this: show it to someone who doesn't know a support level from a grocery list. You might be surprised what they catch that your expert eyes missed.
Trust me – mama Voz knows what she's talking about.
